Saying Good-Bye to Bike Fest

It is with a somewhat heavy heart that I inform you that the Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Festival has come to an end.

It was a great summer ride for twenty-four years and Our Community Place, with the help of the Shenandoah Bicycle Coalition, has had the honor of hosting the ride for the past eleven.

It has been so much fun serving you over the years and we have very much appreciated your support for our program. Your contributions have generated tens of the thousands of dollars to support our mission to cultivate a community of restoration and hope, to welcome all, and to honor the intrinsic dignity and value of all people.

Our decision to let the ride go was based largely upon the reality that we were never truly able to connect the ride directly with our community center programming. It was a great fundraiser and a fun time, but it also required considerable staff energy to pull off. We believe that if we focus that same staff energy on our core mission and the immediate community that we serve, that our financial needs will be met in other ways.

Another factor in our decision to end the Bike Festival is that there are many more rides available in the valley than there were eleven years ago, and it did not make sense for us to continue competing with these events given that our organizational energy and efforts must be directed elsewhere. Below we are including a list of all of the rides we know of that are available. While we would be happy for you to support any of the rides in the Valley, we would like to draw your attention to two rides in particular that have a direct connection to Our Community Place.

Bike Shenandoah—September 17, 2016 – A benefit ride that supports seven agencies based in Harrisonburg, including Our Community Place. Distances include a Century, Metric Century, 30-mile, 15-mile, and a 5-mile family ride.

Shenandoah Valley Century– September 13, 2016 – This ride is put on by the Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition, the group that invited us to start hosting our ride years ago, and that has helped us with routes, maps, ride support, etc. over the years.
