The Brazilian pianist Gloria Raimondi is studying for a Masters in Piano at JMU. In 2017 she won the special prize competition for young musicians in Rio de Janeiro. She has attended master classes with Stephen Hough (England), Michal Szymanowski (Poland), Michael Gurt (USA), Olga Kiun (Russia), Jean Bavouzet (France), among others. In Brazil she was an active performer throughout the country, playing solo, chamber music, major music festivals, and offered master classes in music schools and universities. This year she premiered pieces for four hands with Wendy Wang by German composer Ernst Mahle at the Piracicaba International Piano Festival in Sao Paolo Brazil.
Brazilian trumpet player Islan Santos began playing in his father’s church at nine. By 14 he was second trumpet with the Limeira Symphony Orchestra, followed by pop and jazz studies at the Conservatory of Tatui. He has studied with Gileno Santana in Portugal, and with George Garzone, Jon Finn and Anne Peckham of Berklee College of Music, Boston. He won the Curitiba Music Festival prize, where he studied with Fernando Dissenha of the Sao Paulo State Symphony. Previous to coming to Harrisonburg, he was first solo trumpet with the symphonic band Henrique Marques of Limeira. He has performed in masterclasses for eminent teachers such as Diego Garbin (Brazil), Mitch Haupers (United States), and Pacho Flores (Venezuela). JMU invited Islan to play with the Jazz Ensemble as special solo guest in several concerts. At the Waynesboro Symphony Orchestra, he has played major pieces of Mahler, Stravinsky and Prokofiev.
Doug Ritcher is a JMU musician performing with choral groups and jazz ensembles. He directs the VMRC Intergenerational Choir and facilitates songwriting workshops with residents of Gemeinschaft Home. He has planed with local bands Gryzzle and Oomami at venues such as Clementines, Hotel Madison, Pale Fire Brewing, Restless Moon, and Rocktown Kitchen.
